Feelin’ Dirty in the Grocery Checkout Line: Tabloids Gone Mad
It seems more and more difficult to pay for our groceries and feel good about ourselves these days; not so much because of the downfall of the economy but because of ridiculous tabloids exploiting not only to us, but also to our children, what should be private moments of the lives of the famous.
Bold headlines and images of the confirmed or possibly pregnant, dangerous liaisons, fat or skinny issue, bad dressed list, of the happenings of celebrity children is the primary focus of any tabloid to try to capture possible readers. Many moms will tell you that by the time the list has been crossed off they are a little on the tired side, however they still need to worry about keeping the kids satisfied until they get out of the store with everything paid for. While they wait, curious eyes often move to find something that will keep everyone in good spirits.
Sometimes a headline or image capture one’s attention and without picking up the tabloid, she will quickly glance the cover to learn more. That’s when that strangely dirty feeling sneaks in. Would you really want the same information about you or your family broadcast in such a way, especially if it’s false? Probably not! Is it really your business to know about who broke up or who may be pregnant? Not really. Will issues disappear or will you feel better about yourself by being privy to the successes or failures of others? A resoundingly loud no!
While it is hard to think of people spending their dollars and cents on tabloids, many readers indulge themselves in the latest rumors to be entertained. As a result of reality TV being so popular today, it no surprise that people feel they have a right to know the personal business of celebrities.
A danger that comes with tabloids is the spreading of false rumors and somehow because they’re celebrities, we decide (wrong, in my opinion) that “It’s what they signed up for.” These rumors can shake the lives of whom they’re about, sometimes creating trouble where there wasn’t any to begin with.
You’ve heard rumors of an affair but not hear confirmation of a break-up from reps until months later. In that circumstance we have to wonder if there were major problems even before the rumor appeared, or if it was the rumor itself that eventually caused the couple to split, whether or not an affair actually occurred. It’s all kind of like sickening high school type stuff, but adults are readily participating.
No matter how often we may see or hear someone famous on TV, in the movies or on the radio, we are not close to them in any way, and therefore, should not feel like we have the right to know their business or have a need to get a report every time they make a move.
Our society’s infatuation with celebrities, their children, minute details of their life, etc. really freaks me out. What’s the benefit of knowing these things? We do not walk away from the grocery store checkout line any smarter than when we first got there if we read tabloids. It’s sad our society feels the need to invade the privacy of celebrities’ lives, sometimes spreading false rumors just so the tabloid can make a profit.
