Considering the other options out there a job on an offshore oil rig is a great opportunity. As an entry level position you can earn around US$50,000. The working hours are usually 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off so you only really end up working 6 months of the year.

The work on an offshore oil rig is hark work and requires a lot of focus, but with the earning ability it is understandable. One of the great things many workers report is all the great relationships you make. Despite being stuck in the middle of nowhere the accommodation is quite modern and usually 4-5 star standard.

Working on an offshore oil rig can be a hazardous environment, despite the modern technology the rig are beaming with these days a lack in focus could result in someone being seriously hurt or worse. You need to be a fast learner, tolerant, teachable, and aware of your surroundings to have a successful career in the oil industry. It can be demanding physical as well as mentally so being fit is a great help.

Despite what the media say about a slowing economy our thirst for energy and oil is enormous. The oil industry is the biggest industry in the world and there are millions of dollars spent everyday in the search for more oil. Whether you have experience or not there are hundreds of oil rig jobs posted online everyday.

Safety is very important on board an oil rig and safely equipment must be worn. One of the measure is a color code. Every time a piece of lifting equipment has been tested it is tagged with a color, only items with the right color should be used.

Also don’t upset the radio operator, medic or chef. Helicopters, medical attention and food are most important.
