What to Consider in a Tattoo Idea Site

by Reese Lanter

Online tattoo idea sites were supposed to make choosing tattoo designs more convenient to people. Having too many sites, however, has people confused not only with which tattoo designs to chose but also on which sites to choose the designs from. How can you make sure that you are using the best tattoo idea site? Here are some things that you should look for in a tattoo website or gallery.

Designs and Categories

Of course, the tattoo idea site that you are in should first and foremost offer a great range of tattoo designs to choose from. Both free and paid sites boast that they have sites filled with thousands of designs. It would be great though if a site could also offer you the approximate number of designs that they have.

You wouldn’t want to visit sites with unsupported claims of having the biggest collection online. At the same time, you should also choose a tattoo idea site that has a very organized collection of designs. You should be able to search by using tattoo category keywords.

Policies and Terms of Service

Good online tattoo galleries would not just simply offer you a chance to browse through an unlimited gallery for an unlimited period of time. You should clearly look for the terms of service of a particular site. Read through the fine print and make sure that they clearly have details of payment and how much for how long will you be required to pay. You might be surprised that some scam tattoo idea sites have hidden fees or purposefully ambiguous instructions to weasel out more money from clients.

Guarantees

A quality guarantee from the managers of a tattoo idea site would give you a lot of peace of mind. Some sites will allow you to use and pay for the services of their sites but will guarantee a return of the money you spent if you are not satisfied. A policy like this will ensure that you have nothing to lose. Be careful though. Always make sure that you read and understand the money back guarantee policies or that you contact the site owner about it. Some policies have hidden rules that might rob you of your refund.

Flexible Membership

You would be better off in a tattoo idea site that has flexible membership rules. Some sites have lower priced memberships that will expire after a prescribed period of time with an option for membership renewal. A lot of sites also offer lifetime memberships for a one time large fee.

Forums and Testimonials

Reputable online tattoo galleries always have a testimonial area or a members’ forum. This will let you know what people think of the site’s services. Forums in particular will also allow you greater freedom to interact with other members and ask them tattoo related topics and ideas.

Directories and Artists

A comprehensive directory of artists and tattoo shops for members should also be provided by your tattoo site. You would want this feature to save you the trouble and effort of locating a shop yourself. It would be an even better feature if an online tattoo site could offer reviews of local shops and artists.

Digital Camera Shopping And Maintenance Tips

by Chris Campbell

If your expensive and latest-technology digital SLR camera gets broken, the obvious and first thing to do is to contact the manufacturer and bring the camera to the nearest branch. For example, if your Canon EOS gets broken and you’re residing in the US, you can send your camera to Canon USA.

D90 Pros: The ISO capability is the same as that of Nikon D300. The layout is very intuitive, something that Nikon is recognized for. The number of frames per second, card access and fast focus. The ability to make videos, a first for a DSLR.

D90 Cons: The video doesn’t have AF and the audio quality is weak. The kit lens is not as good as Nikon claims

Chemicals are the number one waterproof digital camera tip. Underwater cameras are meant for salt and freshwater and not pools or hot tubs with chemicals of any kind.

When I decided to buy the D90, I already had a period of research where I looked at a number of different cameras. What I really wanted was the D300 model, because it was waterproof and it had a magnesium body, but the extra $600 wasn’t worth those features.

The sensor of the model I bought, the D90, is the same with the one that comes with the D300 camera, so the ISO capabilities are the same. Some of the reviews I read said that the noise reduction of the D90 model is better than it was for D300. If you also use the Nikon VR lenses, you can take good photos at very reduced shutter speeds.

For those who own a Hasselblad, I recommend you get in touch with Gil Ghitelman and consider sending your camera to him. He’s the Hasselblad go-to person in my book because he hires his own Hasselblad repair person.

If you live in New England, you’ve probably heard of Steve Grimes - the only camera legend living in the area. He can help you out with all sorts of large format issues and problems with customize machining. He also does lens mounting, large format shutter repairs, etc. You can check out his website at skgrimes.com and contact him through 401-762-0857.

Many people will do OK with the kit lens of this camera, but it could’ve been much better. All in all, the camera is very good. I just wish it had some weather proofing, though at this price you can’t really expect that. Besides that, this camera does it all at an OK level. Some problems exist though, and the four stars rating reflects just that.

How Many Digital Cameras Do You Need To Try?

by Chris Campbell

After four wonderful years, I finally sold my Nikon D70. To this date, I still miss it. I got a D40 not long after, but somehow it just didn’t feel quite right. I couldn’t complain about image quality; it’s without a doubt better than that of the D70. The problem was, it felt tedious just to go through menus and look for settings for ISO, white balance, card formatting, etc. I never had that problem with my D70, as it had dedicated buttons that made settings customization a lot easier. Also, the D40 doesn’t have autofocus when I use my 50mm 1.8 lens. So after three short days of using it, I returned the D40.

Number of megapixels: Most stores, both online and brick-and-mortar, concentrate on promoting megapixels - the more, the better. This is only a marketing technique and is not always true. Let us understand why.

Ease of use is definitely a strong point with the Flip Video. There’s basically one big red button for recording, and a couple more for reviewing and deleting. The Pure Digital promo video in all it’s cutesy cartoon like style describes shooting videos as simple as making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. For most people it will be that easy. Simply record (big red button), upload (flip out USB), edit (software included), and share (included software emails friends and uploads to blogs or social network sites).

Of course, anytime you need a computer to do something, it’s never that easy. I’ve never had the dreaded “blue screen of death” stop me from making a PB & J sandwich. There have been numerous reports of software problems, and really slow video uploads using the Flip Video with both PC’s and Apples Macs.

Well sure, I still have to press a few more buttons to change white balance settings and format the card, and the Auto ISO is not as precise as that of Nikon’s, but it still makes for an excellent camera. Other than those three, all the other buttons which access the other features are there. I especially liked the RGB histogram because it shows individual color-clipping.

The other best feature about this camcorder, is that it’s fun. Sure, it’ll never replace your dedicated HD camcorder for shooting high quality video, but it makes up for that in other areas. You can take the Flip Video with you anywhere. It easily fits into your pants pocket, a purse or backpack. For those spontaneous and unscripted events it’s great to just whip it out and catch some really candid clips. YouTube and FaceBook fans will love it for just that reason.

I still like the D80, except the XSi wins because it’s a 2008 model and has the same features found in the pro 1DS and the semi-pro 40D. It may not be the best SLR camera ever, but it’s the best SLR camera of the moment for me.

Craft Fairs Selling vs. Online Selling

by Mara Hernandez-Capili

During these times, more and more people are finding ways on how to make money aside from their usual jobs. More employees are looking for sideline or other business opportunities in order to have extra money to buy that dress, spend on a dream family vacation or simply just to add up on her earnings. These people usually use their extra skills or talents in looking for ways to earn extra cash.

Creative people are lucky because they can use this inner core gift to their advantage. They can make crafts and sell them to people they know who would be willing to buy them. They can go to craft fairs or craft festivals where more people can view their products and where there could be higher chances that it could be bought. Crafts fairs are a venue where sellers and buyers meet and greet in one roof. These venues are full of people who use their creativity in order to earn more.

Online selling is also an option where you can sell your goods using the internet as your medium. You can take images of your work and post it in your websites or blog for buyers to see. It states there your products information along with its description and price. Online selling is a cheaper alternative to sell your stuffs since you dont need to pay booth or exhibit dues. It means no registration/ booth fees, no transportation and membership dues which are common on craft fairs.

So what is more important or reliable? Selling your crafts in fairs or selling it online?

These two have their own share of advantages and disadvantages. Selling in festivals will give you a first hand view and experience on selling. It will provide a first hand encounter or interaction with your buyers, which is a very important factor in selling. I prefer selling to crafts fairs. Why? It is because of the experience of that you will gain by selling your stuffs face to face. I believe that interacting and speaking with your customers are a best way to learn how to effectively sell and be good in the business.

5 Fantastic Nature & Wildlife Photography Contests

by DeeDee Dobson

If you spend any time at all outdoors with a camera, you should try your luck in one (or all) of these contests. Even though the competition may be daunting, it’s always worth a try, and there are some really nice prizes up for grabs.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition Held by BBC Wildlife Magazine and the National History Museum in London, this prestigious competition is now in its 45th year. They welcome pros, amateurs and youths to enter in the 9 main (3 for youths) and 3 special categories. The cost to enter is 20/3 images, and the jury picks one winner and one runner-up in each category. The winners in the adult categories are awarded 500, and the runners-up 250.

Those under 18 may submit up to 10 photos, at no cost, in the youth categories (”10 years and younger”, “11-14 years”, and “15-17 years”). Acceptable subjects are wild animals, landscapes and plants, and the winner and runner-up in each category are awarded 250 and 100, respectively. The “Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year” gets to spend a day out with an acclaimed wildlife photographer, and also receives a cash prize of 500.

In the three special awards, the requirements are a bit more specific. For The Gerard Durrell Award for Endangered Wildlife award, you need to submit photos of species listed as critically endangered, vulnerable or near-threatened on the 2008 IUCN Red List. The Eric Hosking Award is open to photographers aged 18-26, and participants are required to enter a 10-image portfolio. The One Earth Award focuses on conservation, and they are looking for images that encourages respect for nature. The winner of each category is awarded 1,000.

The prize of all prizes, The Wildlife Photographer of the Year, is awarded to the single image the jury finds most striking and memorable of all category winners. The award is presented at a special ceremony at the National History Museum in London, where the winner is presented with a check for 10,000. All winning and commended images will also be part of an exhibit at the museum, which then tours all over the world. The 2009 deadline is March 27.

Windland Smith Rice International Awards Held by Nature’s Best Magazine and the Smithsonian’s Museum of Natural History, this contest is named in memory of conservation advocate and photographer Windland Smith Rice. The 16 categories are open to professional, amateur and youth photographers, and include Animal Antics, Creative Digital, Indigenous Cultures, Oceans, and more. One in particular caught my attention: the Camera Club category, where a group of photographers submit up to 20 photos (no more than 3 each, though). The entry fee is $25/20 images, and prizes include cash, your photo(s) printed in the Awards 2009 Collector’s Edition of Nature’s Best Photography, and possible inclusion in the annual exhibit at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC. The 2009 deadline is May 4.

National Wildlife The 39th edition of this annual contest is open to amateur, professional and youth photographers, and for a fee of $15, you may enter up to 20 images in the 7 different categories. They are looking for photos of wildlife, of course, but also backyard habitats, people and nature, landscapes, and plants. The category winners receive $1,000 each, and two Grand Prize winners (one amateur and one professional) are awarded $5,000 each. The 2009 deadline is July 20.

The Great Outdoors Photo Contest Sponsored by Photo District News and National Geographic, this contest is open to everyone (except residents of Arizona, New Jersey, and Vermont) and the categories are: “Scenes of the Natural World”, “Parks & Safaris”, “Beaches”, “Underwater”, “Islands”, “Plants”, “Animals”, “Insects & Gardens”, and “Outdoor Sports & Activities”. With so much to choose from, you’re bound to find at least one category that fits your style. For amateurs, it’s $12/image or photo essay to enter (a photo essay consists of up to six images that convey a story around a particular theme, and you can submit as many photos and photo essays as you like. Prizes include gift certificates, a five-night stay at the Mandarin Oriental Riviera Maya Hotel in Mexico, camera equipment, and more. The deadline is April 20, 2009, but for an extra $10/image, you can enter until May 4.

EuroNatur In this contest - “Nature Treasures in Europe” - they are looking for photos of European animals, plants or landscapes. It’s free to enter and you may submit up to 5 photos. Prizes include trips and camera equipment, and the winning pictures will be part of an exhibit at Schloss Wolfstein (a castle in Bavaria, Germany) and printed in EuroNatur magazine and in a wall calendar. The deadline is March 31 2009.

Mastering Ballroom Dance Steps

by Collin Love

There was a time when people thought that you had to be professionally trained dancer in order to pull off ballroom dancing. With shows like “Dancing with the Stars”, people quickly began to realize that with a little practice anyone can be graceful. All you need to do is know basic ballroom dance steps and the terminology of dances.

Swing dancing came roaring back in popularity a few years ago. It brought ballroom dancing to the public’s attention as a younger generation was having an absolute blast dancing the night away to rockabilly style music. The triple step is the key step in most swing dancing forms. This is a fast three-step move with the count off of quick-quick-slow or 1&2.

The most common form of swing was East Coast swing. This step uses the triple step in the rock step together. You actually do a triple step twice and then the rock step. It would be counted literally as 1&2, 3&4, 5, 6. If you have not yet figured out, when you see a step listed as 1&2, it is a quick step.

One popular swing dance is the Carolina shag. This particular ballroom dance combines the triple step and the kick ball change instead of the rock step. This is a little more fast-paced and has a count of “one- and- two”.

In order to become adequate at ballroom dancing, you will have to learn these and many more. Steps such as the coaster step, anchor step, Grapevine, sailor step and lock step are all basic ballrom dance steps that stand by themselves or are combined to create different types of ballroom dances. To be successful in learning all of the steps, you’ll have to be coordinated and be able to keep the timing as they all have their own unique traits.

It may seem a little intimidating at first, but once you learn the basics, ballroom dancing can actually be quite easy. If you have ever been to an event, it looks as though all the dancers have rehearsed their moves and somehow managed not to bump into each other. In actuality, it is merely that everyone is the timing of the steps and can quickly blend in without any disruption to anyone else’s dancing.

Ballrom dancing is not something that you really want to jump right in and do, but after a few lessons you’ll be surprised at how quickly you can pick it up and be well on your way to mastering basic ballroom dance steps. There is nothing more beautiful than watching ballroom dancing performed to perfection and there is no reason why you can’t be the one performing.
