The Value Of A Diverse Workplace

by Ben Baldwin

If you’re at work right now, have a look around. In the year 2009, chances are that you are just one of many different individuals sitting at your office representing the rich diversity of our society.

Diversity can manifest itself into many different characteristics. Whether its sex, age, religion, culture or any other unique characteristic - workplace diversity is a reality these days in many offices around the world.

A diverse workplace can be beneficial to both employers and employees. A better decision making process, greater innovation and creativity which leads to improved business and product development can all stem out of a range of cultures and ethnicities. Above all, this can all result in increased sales to a larger pool of customers.

A multicultural and diverse workplace also has more intangible benefits. By building a more diverse environment, you are encouraging a place for open discussion and dialogue, resulting in a more productive and relaxed workplace.

Another benefit of a diverse work environment is that employee retention can be much higher for companies that have greater diversity. People like to feel comfortable in their work environment that includes a diverse range of employees. Nobody likes to be the only one at work. Therefore, a diversified workforce allows people to socialize and relax with co-workers which leads to higher job satisfaction and less employee turnover.

While there are a number of benefits, there can certainly also be challenges that arise as a result of having a diverse work environment.

Overcoming cultural, language and perceptual barriers can be a challenge in a diverse work environment. Not dealing with these can create a lack of teamwork, moral and productivity and can become very problematic. Ensuring that you continue to communicate sensibly and effectively with your employees can make a big difference.

Other challenges include a reluctance to accept change, and perhaps even diversity itself. There will always be individuals who prefer to do things the way they’ve always been done. This attitude inhibits innovation and can present a challenge to managers.

A great way to embrace the diversity that makes up your work environment, is to create and implement a diversity plan for your company. In the plan, outline the steps you’ll take to include diversity practices in anything from hiring to your decision making process. This is one major step to avoid challenges that may impact the operations of your business.

A Few Things To Consider When Choosing A Truck Driving Career

by John Williams

Some kids see those big rigs driving down the street and think that they want to drive one for a career someday. But not everyone is physically able to drive a truck, so if that is your career plan before you sign up with a training program at a college or truck driving school first make sure you can pass the DOT physical.

Do you have any major health concerns or are you missing some fingers or toes? Getting a medical waiver for some health issues is possible but not for everything. You want to think about this first so if you know you have major issues then you may want to learn more about the DOT requirements before spending money on training.

Finding a truck driving school program for you needs will take some homework on your part. You will need to learn what each program offers such as how long it is and how much it will cost.

After training you may likely go to work for a trucking company where they will place you with a more experienced driver. Hopefully the school you went to gave you good driving time behind the wheel and not just book training (ask about that).

Going to work for a trucking company and having an experienced driver assigned to help you improve your skills is great, but make sure to find a trucking school that also focuses on behind the wheel time. This will help develop a base line of important skills needed on the road.

In addition to learning how to drive a truck you may also learn vehicle inspection, hook and trailer drops and other information. It is important to get a good education at a school and good practice time as well.

One if not the biggest factor in how good of an education you receive will depend on the quality of instructors. Of course the school will have their rules, but good instructors can make all the difference from OK training to really good training.

Learning the proper driving habits early on is important for your safety and those around you. Therefore finding a school that really focuses on safety instead of just rushing you out the door and collecting money is something you want to be careful of.

Learning a New Job

One of the biggest challenges that I have had in life was learning a new job.  Sure, that might not sound so hard, but for me, I love habitual behavior, so learning a new job was pretty scary.

Perhaps the biggest challenge I ever had learning a new job was when I took a job as a business phone systems salesman.  I guess I had used a phone in the past, but I wasn’t prepared for the number of models that were available and that I would have to sell.

The first day of work, I was introduced to many different Nortel business phones and I was expected to know how all of them worked.  I was also required to read some articles on how to maximize phone system resources in organizations - something I had never thought of before.

Thankfully those days are behind me now, but I still dread the idea of learning a new job - it is definitely one of my biggest phobias.

Job Hunting from Home

One of my favorite things about the Internet is the ability to do many of the things we used to have to leave our home for from the comfort of our own computer.  Everything from ordering groceries online to using a job search engine to find a new job can be done via your computer at home.

Recently, I was looking for a new part time job to supplement my income as it was the slow time of year for my employer.  I thought it would be a great opportunity to try something new and spend some time away from my office desk.

I looked to see if I could find some retail jobs in Australia as that was where I was residing at the time.  I had little difficulty finding some companies that were looking for staff and I was able to find a job.

It was not only a good experience, but it was convenient to do my job hunting from home.

Training to Sell Car Insurance

Our firm recently decided to expand their operations to include insurance products on top of the many financial services that we already offered.  I suppose this was a natural market for them to jump into as most of our existing services would be complimentary to the cheap auto insurance that we would be selling.

But this meant that we would have to take additional training to know how to properly sell vehicle insurance to our clients.  We learned the difference between regular and classic car insurance, how to properly quote a cheap car insurance rate, and how to utilize the new system that included the automotive insurance.

It will be a bumpy couple of weeks as we start selling our automotive insurance to the public, but I don’t mind having another product that I can sell and get a recurring commission.

Brawl and Fall

The first time that I ever seriously hurt myself was when I was working for a commercial roofing Westerly RI company. I was minding my own business, just doing my job one day when a couple of guys on the ground started fighting. They threw a beer bottle and it hit me, causing me to fall off the roof.

I realize that this never would have happened if I had been following the proper safety precautions, but I was still irritated that it had happened because of a drunken brawl between two men. Of all the reasons for me to fall while working on roofing Westerly RI, I never imagined this scenario.

I learned my lesson and I never work up on a roof without the proper safety straps anymore. I also do not have to worry too much about it anymore, as I now work for a flat roofing Westerly RI company and there is very little chance that I will fall off a flat roof.

Starting a Job As a Travel Agent

I recently decided that it was time for a change of career and I needed to weigh my options as to what I wanted to do with my life.  Having worked at the same job for the past 15 years, it was strange to be at the point where needed to figure out what I wanted to do with my life.

I went and spoke to a couple of career counselors at the local career campuses to see if they could help me out and point me in the right direction.  Now, a few months later, I have decided to become a travel agent.

After a week at my new job, I have been assigned to the department in charge of selling clients cheap holidays.  Basically what we do is create cheap holiday packages that provide our clients great value for a great price.

This past week, I was able to secure some cheap flights to Turkey and put together a travel package for a week of relaxation at Icmeler Turkey.  We’re going to start selling it this week and if the sales go well, I should get a nice bonus check.

Company Challenge

The company that I work for often has challenges for the staff to earn extra money and prizes. We have just completed a challenge for a Las Vegas hotel promotion. The winner gets an all inclusive four day trip to Vegas with a friend.

I worked hard for this challenge, as I really wanted the trip and take advantage of the MGM signature hotel Las Vegas promo code. I have only been there once and the trip was fantastic. I would really love to go and see some of the new shows they have playing there.

I think that the Las Vegas promotion is the challenge that I have put the most effort into since I started working there. We will find out in a week who won the challenge, but I am certainly keeping my fingers crossed that it will be me. I know if it is, it will be one trip that I definitely earned.
